Here at POET, we're lucky enough to work with some brilliant up-and-coming brands in the FMCG space - brands led my passionate industry veterans now taking the helm of their own brand, couples who have created a brand and now want to turn their passion project into something more 'real' as well as bright, driven entrepreneurs from other industries who have spotted an opportunity and are now building a new brand to answer that calling.
Many of these brands - from first hand calls with them - ask where they can get advice in an evermore challenging, competitive marketplace. The answer can sometimes come in the shape of marketers who have crafted brand narratives, built or resurrected brands or who simply know the consumer better than anyone within an FMCG organisation.
If a Marketing leader is interested in becoming a non-executive advisor, there are several steps they can take:
1. Build a Strong Network: Developing a strong network of industry contacts is essential for finding non-executive advisor positions. You can attend industry events, join professional associations, and build relationships with executives in your field.
2. Enhance Business Acumen: To become a non-executive advisor, a Marketing leader must possess a strong understanding of business strategy, financial management, and risk management. On top of picking this up throughout their career, they can gain this knowledge by taking courses in business management, finance and leadership.
3. Develop Strong Communication Skills: Effective communication skills are critical for non-executive advisors. CMOs should be able to communicate complex marketing concepts to non-marketing executives in a clear and concise manner.
4. Identify Target Companies: Research companies that align with your values and interests. Seek out companies that have a gap in marketing expertise that you can fill.
5. Build a Reputation: Marketers can build a reputation as a thought leader in their field by publishing articles, speaking at industry events, and participating in panel discussions.
6. Seek out Non-Executive Advisory Roles: You can search for non-executive advisory roles on company websites, job boards, and through networking. You can also approach companies directly to inquire about non-executive advisory opportunities.
If becoming an Advisor to up-and-coming brands in the FMCG industry appeals to you, get in touch... Many of them would benefit greatly from the invaluable strategic guidance you might be able to offer.
We'd love to find out more about what sectors/categories appeal to you and whether some of our clients, just starting out on their journey, might be worth introducing you to.
